New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education has issued fresh guidelines on the implementation of the three-language policy under the National Education Policy 2020, clarifying that students currently studying in Class 10 will not be required to comply with the new framework.

Under the policy, to be implemented from the current academic year, students in CBSE-affiliated schools will be required to study two Indian languages and one foreign language.

The clarification comes amid concerns among parents after students currently studying in Classes 7, 8 and 9, many of whom are already learning two foreign languages, faced uncertainty over whether they would have to discontinue one of them to accommodate an Indian language.

According to the revised guidelines, students who are in Classes 7, 8 and 9 during the current academic year will not be required to appear for a public examination in the third language when they reach Class 10. Those already studying two foreign languages may continue with them but must additionally study one Indian language to comply with the three-language policy.

The CBSE has also announced that two levels of assessment—Standard and Advanced—will be introduced in Mathematics and Science for Class 9 students from the current academic year.

All students will take a common 80-mark examination. Those wishing to demonstrate higher proficiency may opt for the Advanced examination, which will assess deeper conceptual understanding and higher-order thinking skills.

The revised assessment framework will be implemented for students appearing for the Class 10 Board examinations in 2028, according to the guidelines.
